DR. KING LEGACY APARTMENTS Construction Cost: $13M Project Completed: June 2011 Developer: Lawndale Christian Development Corp. The project site is approximately two acres
located in the West Side
neighborhood of North Lawndale, where
Martin Luther King Jr. resided in the 1960’s. The site faces 16th
Street which is a major commercial street between two residential
streets, Avers Avenue
and Hamlin Avenue. The program
calls for a mixed-use structure
designed with six commercial retail spaces and forty-five-unit
residences. The design solution is a series
of connected buildings with multiple entrances. The building forms
a U-shape and reinforces the street wall on both the commercial and
residential streets. The structure is three stories with commercial retail on the ground
floor with residential units
above. The buildings contain two-,
three- and four-bedroom units. All
units have private balconies or patios. The masonry-clad building envelope
has polychromatic brick patterns. Bays are added
to further emphasize rhythm
and pattern. The building colors are metaphoric of Dr. King’s doctrines endorsing equality for
people of color throughout the world. The design exceeds City
of Chicago Green Home requirements for energy-star certification with Green roofs and sustainable features.
Parking is located in the building’s rear,
surrounded by private green space, balconies and play lots. |
