NORTH KOSTNER HEALTH CENTER Construction Cost: $14M Project Completion Date: April 2014 Owner: Near North Health Services Corporation 1276 N. Clybourn Chicago, IL 60610 Building certified as LEED Gold. Near North Health Services proceeded the Affordable Care Act in
providing services for all clients regardless of income and insurance. Near North Health Services is a Federally
Qualified Health Center (FQHC), the organization expanded their mission
statement to include, an environment for “wellness and healing”. This project is a new health center
located at 1520 N. Kostner Avenue in the Humboldt
Park neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois in a Menard’s “out- parcel”. Near North Health Clinic is
approximately 29,399 square feet and contains lobby, offices, support spaces, x-ray lab and exam rooms. The health center services include, but
not limited program spaces such as Internal Medicine, Maternal & Child Health,
WIC/Nutrition, Dental, Ophthalmology, and Substance Abuse
programs along with other
health and educational functions. Primary design issue was site visibility and creation of a
health environment for wellness and healing. The building design solution revolves around a two-story structure
with an interior landscape courtyard area and the landscaped courtyard is
visible from many of the public spaces. Landscaping
creates a serene environment essential to Health
Center’s mission statement. The
building envelope is constructed
of masonry veneer with metal studs with ban windows and a curtain
wall on the east entry facade. A
conference room clad with blue metal panels further denotes main entrances. The courtyard is created with
a glass curtain
wall enabling maximum
fenestration into the program and public spaces. The structure is steel columns and
beams, band windows that add
additional natural light. The main east elevation, which
faces Kostner Avenue, contains the building entrance, highlighted by the introduction of an
oversized canopy which acts as a dual function element in providing shelter
and land marking. Other amenities
include a green roof, outdoor seating areas, bicycle racks, a roof top trellis area,
and landscaped areas.
The building also
features a geothermal ground source energy pump for heating and cooling. |
