SINGLE FAMILY HOME Winner: The Chicago and Midwest Villa 1996 Juror’s Choice Award, The Chicago Athenaeum Construction Cost: NA Project Completed: May 1996 Developers: NA Located in Chicago’s Historic Kenwood District, this single-family residence expresses
the dual nature of an interior divided between public and private. The southern half, or the public zone, makes an extroverted
gesture by thrusting itself towards the street resembles a bay. The southern half
is an elongated octagon containing a two-story living room, dining
room and, a second-floor study overlooking the living
room. A series of windows directly under the eaves acts as a clerestory. This is to take advantage of the available south light. The southern, or public, half
is also taller
than the northern (private) half, again calling more attention to itself. The northern half,
or the private zone, contains two bedrooms
for the children, a 1-1/2 story
master bedroom, a family room
and eat-in-kitchen. The family
room can also double as a guest
bedroom or serve
as a fourth bedroom in case
one of the
owner’s parents have
to live with
them. With baby boomers nearing fifty, the need
spatially to accommodate extended family
members is becoming an issue and is addressed in this home. The entire southern zone, along with
the street facade
as well as part of the northern elevation is clad in masonry with
stone trim. This is in keeping contextually with the existing residences in
South Kenwood. The remainder is clad in E.I.F.S.
The garage is placed at the rear
of the building to limits its visibility from
the street. |
